Barcrest really likes to over-complicate things it seems. Soldier of Rome appeared to be such a mess that we almost decided to skip it and move on to the next. A quick glance at the paytable didn't really boost our motivation either, but here we are...

Soldier of Rome is a 7-reel slot with 50 paylines in normal play that can extend up to 100 paylines. There are 4 Money Burst Reels which have 1 row each, and 3 Mighty Reels which have 5 standard rows, and 5 additional rows that can be unlocked during the game. It's playable on all devices between €1 to €500 and comes with a Big Bet feature allowing for €20, €30, and €50 bets. It's all built on top of a rather strange game engine that takes a few spins, and some reading of the help file, to understand.

If not obvious enough already, the game has a Roman warrior theme, with a reel set on fire (which looks kind of cool) and a roman soldier standing to the far left, looking kind of dumb. The sound of the reels spinning is something you will recognize instantly if you've played Bruce Lee or Zeus before.

Soldier of Rome comes with 2 paytables, one for the standard game and one for the big bets game. The only difference, however, is that all winnings are multiplied by 2 during big bets. The low-value symbols are made out of the typical card suit symbols, while the premiums are represented by chariots, coins, eagles, Caesar, and a top value Roman lady worth 5x for a combination of 5.

The Wild symbol is three positions high and will expand to fill the whole reel if it lands in full view during the base game. During the Free Spins and in Big Bet games, Wild symbols can land in partial view and will expand to fill the whole reel.

Matching all 4 symbols in the Money Burst Reels will initiate the Lightning Spins feature. During Lightning Spins, numerous symbols that match the 4 symbols in the Money Burst Reels will be added to the Mighty Reels.

With the Big Bet option, you may choose to bet €20, €30 or €50 per game. Increasing the bet offers extra features as follows:

• 5 x €20 big bet spins with wild symbols partially in view will activate top reels and expand to fill the whole reel (up to 100 paylines).
• 5 x €30 big bet spins with all 20 big bet advantages plus all low value symbols removed.
• 5 x €50 big bet spins with all 20 & 30 big bet advantages plus Mighty Reels 100 paylines always active.

3 scatter symbols trigger the free spins feature, awarding 10 initial free spins, with each additional scatter awarding an extra 5 free spins (the maximum number of free spins that can be awarded is 25).
